Have you ever wondered what it’s really like to be a tattoo artist? Beyond the creative freedom and cool aesthetics, there’s a side to tattooing that many don’t see, the challenges, the sacrifices, and the deep love for the craft that keeps us going.

For many women, alternative individuals, and those seeking a safe, inclusive space, finding the right tattoo artist is just as important as the tattoo itself. That’s why I’m sharing my journey, the highs, the struggles, and why I wouldn’t trade this path for anything.
Here’s what you’ll take away from this post:
The biggest challenges I’ve faced as a tattoo artist
Why creating a safe and inclusive studio matters
How I balance business, creativity, and mental well-being
What makes tattooing one of the most rewarding careers out there
1. The Struggles of Breaking Into the Industry
The tattoo industry is notoriously tough to break into, especially for women and marginalized artists. Many traditional apprenticeships can be expensive, competitive, and even toxic in some spaces. When I started, I had to carve my own path, learning the ropes while also navigating skepticism as a female artist.
Challenges:
Lack of mentorship or gatekeeping in some tattoo circles
The cost of high-quality equipment and certifications
Overcoming outdated perceptions of what a “real” tattoo artist looks like
But overcoming these obstacles has made me more determined to create a space where others feel welcomed, supported, and safe.
2. Why Safe & Inclusive Tattoo Studios Matter
Many clients, especially women and LGBTQ+ individuals, have shared stories of feeling uncomfortable or judged in certain tattoo spaces. That’s why I prioritize creating a welcoming, respectful, and safe environment at Oxblood Ink.
What I do differently:
Clear communication and consent-based tattooing
An inclusive, no-judgment space for all bodies and identities
Prioritizing safety, from proper hygiene to ensuring every client feels heard
A tattoo is a lifelong commitment, and everyone deserves to feel empowered during the process.
3. The Physical & Mental Toll of Tattooing
Tattooing is more than just an art form, it’s physically and mentally demanding. Hours of precise work, hunched over in uncomfortable positions, can take a toll on the body. On top of that, managing client expectations, running a business, and staying creatively inspired is a constant juggling act.
How I manage:
Prioritizing self-care with stretching, breaks, and ergonomic adjustments
Setting boundaries to avoid burnout
Continuing education to stay inspired and push my artistic limits
Despite these challenges, the reward of seeing a client’s reaction to their new tattoo makes it all worth it.
4. The Rewarding Side of Tattooing: Why I Love What I Do
For every challenge, there’s a moment that reminds me why I chose this path.
The best parts of being a tattoo artist?
Helping clients reclaim their bodies with meaningful tattoos
Bringing someone’s vision to life through art
Building genuine connections with amazing people
The ever-evolving creativity that keeps me passionate about my craft
Tattooing isn’t just about ink on skin—it’s storytelling, healing, and self-expression.
Yes, tattooing comes with its challenges, but the passion, connection, and art make it all worthwhile.
